In April 2024, local musicians performed a heartwarming concert at the Hospice for their friend Mick Stout, who was battling cancer. Now, the same musicians will perform again in Mick’s memory to raise funds for our care. Mick was the Director of Music at St Albans School and dedicated his life to music, teaching and other people.
Before he died in 2024, Mick shared his experience at the Hospice. He said, “We still can’t quite believe how fortunate we are to be here. There’s nowhere better. I’m in a room with a view of the garden. The birds are tweeting. It’s a home. It feels like family.”
As the father of two young children, Mick was especially grateful to be able to spend more time with them at the Hospice. “The children couldn’t come into the hospital,” he explained. “But here, there’s room and space for them. They’re so happy here. It’s not scary for them.”
After his friends’ musical performance at the Hospice, Mick shared what motivated them: “They wanted to come and do something to cheer me up, and to say thanks to the Hospice for the amazing kindness they’ve given us.”
One year on, Mick’s wife Emily still visits the Hospice with her children who have been receiving bereavement support. “The continuing support has been amazing,” Emily said. “It’s had a huge impact on the children. It made all the difference.”
Now, Emily has high hopes for the concert honouring her husband. “I hope that people come to the event for the amazing musicians and because the Hospice is incredible,” she said. “Even just a small donation would be so helpful because everyone should have hospice care.”
