“We were having a sort out of the house and wanted to donate a few items, and it just so happened that the Abbots Langley shop was en route to our destination. I dropped off the bags to the shop, and bumped into an old friend who was volunteering behind the counter – which was truly lovely! After some catching-up, I put my name forward for the vacancy being advertised in the shop… and the rest is History.”
As a front-of-house member at the Abbots Langley shop, Nick is a familiar face to many who visit the shop, greeting customers and operating the till every Wednesday. He says, “We often get compliments about how lovely the shop looks. We always have quality products in store and we are known as The Harrods of Abbots Langley!”
Having worked as a Sample Cutter for 25 years at an independent company based in Tottenham, Nick’s job was to provide a first garment pattern to show and provide quotations to customers – including to big department store brands such as John Lewis and Evans.
Nick moved to Leavesden over 40 years ago with wife Tina and enjoys spending time with family – they have three daughters and 2 grandchildren. He enjoys various hobbies such as DIY, and local U3A Group. He’s also a committee member and belongs to various groups within the U3A.
Nick continues, “I tell my friends that if they’re wanting to volunteer with a charity, that volunteering at a Hospice is extra special because you will never know whether you might need the support yourself or someone you love may do.”
“One of my favourite moments was being part of the Forty Years of Fashion show in September – as part of the Hospice Fortieth birthday year. My shop manager Trevor, encouraged me to join the fun and be one of the models. My family came to support me and we all had a fabulous night in aid of the Hospice!”
