In October 2021 our Hospice showroom, Returned to Glory, celebrated its tenth birthday! We caught up with Karen Ann, one of the longest serving volunteers, to find out more about her role and why she loves the showroom…
“I love the hustle and bustle of Returned to Glory, the dynamic energetic and vibrancy of being a team member…oh, and making money. What I love about volunteering in the showroom is the camaraderie between us all. We laugh a lot and have a lot of returning customers. To this end we are here for a reason and that reason is to raise funds for The Hospice of St Francis.”
“I have been volunteering at Returned to Glory since October 2011, but this isn’t my first voluntary role. I initially volunteered for BBC Three Counties Radio than later for the Hertfordshire Constabulary, supporting Safer Neighbourhoods.
“The best way to describe my role at Returned to Glory would be ‘all-encompassing’. From customer service to advising delivery and collection procedures, unpacking and general housekeeping. I can also be found serving on the till or receiving and making phone calls to customers as well as managing the ‘wish list’ for customer requests. During quieter moments I like to assist with dressing our showroom, using skills acquired when I was a window dresser.
“I wanted to support the Hospice to give back. I wanted to make a difference, to fundraise for the Hospice and to support my local community.
“I have known about the Hospice through shopping at number twenty and the Hospice charity shop on Berkhamsted High Street as well as in local marketing for fundraising events.”
Describing some of her most favourite moments at the showroom, Karen Ann shares…
“There are so many memories of fun and laughter at Returned to Glory. Although our goal is ultimately to fundraise, it really is the most entertaining place to volunteer…whilst always maintaining professionalism of course!”
Encouraging those wishing to get involved in volunteering for the Hospice, Karen Ann says…
Dedicating your time as a volunteer helps you make new friends, expand your network and boost your social skills. Volunteering also helps you gain professional experience. It promotes personal growth and self-esteem. You WILL make a difference.”
Karen Ann is also buzzing about the next Christmas Shopping events at our Returned to Glory showroom which are taking place on the weekend of the 4th and 5th December.
“I’m so excited about the upcoming Christmas events. They really are a ‘must attend’…and I guarantee you will leave with an armful of goodies.
“Over the years I have taken part in the preparation and the event itself. The changes that happen in the showroom overnight take your breath away! The showroom transforms from a furniture emporium to a Winter Wonderland with plenty of inspiration to make your home the heart of your Christmas.
“The Hustle and bustle of these Christmas events gives me tingles down my spine, reigniting childhood recollections along with some good old fashion cheer. Bring it on!”
