Nurse's Skydive

Nurse Claire raised over £1,000 for our care with her jump

Last September, Nurse Claire took part in the Hospice’s skydive, raising over £1,000 for our care.  Claire explains why she did it:

“I’ve been saying since my twenties: I want to do a jump. So ahead of my sixtieth birthday, I decided to do it. I was surprisingly calm on the day and felt very safe. The instructor talked me through it; he was so reassuring.

I wanted to jump because when patients come to the Hospice I have to build trust with them. And their relatives trust us to care for them, too. I wanted to put myself into that same vulnerable position by trusting that everything would be okay if I put myself in someone else’s hands.

I was the first to jump. There were such amazing views. It was a beautiful day - blue sky all day. The thing that worried me the most was landing, but it was really smooth. Afterwards, I felt elated that I’d done it.

I feel privileged to look after people here [at the Hospice]. As a team, we help them to be as peaceful and comfortable as possible. I see what a difference it makes for patients and relatives to be able to come here.”

The Hospice’s next skydive will be on Saturday 26th April. We’d love for you to take to the skies with us: stfrancis.org.uk/skydive
