Meet Angela

Advice from a long-term volunteer

Angela has been volunteering at the Hospice for seven years. She currently volunteers with our Meet and Greet team on the Inpatient Unit. We asked her what advice she’d give to a new volunteer at the Hospice.

  •  “You never know who will be on the other side of the door, and that’s exciting. You need to have the ability to listen. Often people tell me things they wouldn’t say to their family.”

  • “Be mindful of people and how they’re feeling. I’d encourage all volunteers to show empathy for what patients and families are going through.”

  • “Try to be as helpful as you can. I make tea and coffee for visitors, and try to find any information they need, for instance if they want lunch or dinner here.”

  • “You’re giving visitors their first impression of the Hospice so I think volunteers should make some sort of effort [with their appearance]. I like dressing up for my volunteer shifts.”

  • “I love meeting different people and hearing their stories. I’ve met such a lovely raft of people here and I know new volunteers will, too.”
