Alison's story

The Hospice has been a huge benefit to me in my recovery.

“After I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I had chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, everything. It was all quite overwhelming. Towards the end of my treatment, I realised I’d lost my confidence. There’s a feeling that everything has changed completely, but you’ve got to go off and start this new chapter. I realised I needed some extra support.

I didn’t realise there was this extra side to the Hospice – the community-based support in the Spring Centre for people like me. I was a bit nervous and apprehensive, but once I stepped through the doors everybody was so lovely and welcoming. It’s almost like a little sanctuary. Coming up here to talk has been a godsend, really. It allowed me to express how I was feeling and gain back my confidence. I was surrounded by people that totally understood and offered unconditional support.

I started with Occupational Therapy and then carried on doing various workshops and courses at the Hospice. I attended the Fatigue Workshop and the Colour and Style Workshop, which gave me a boost. I come to meditation every week and there’s a special bond within the group. I also attended the Discovery Connections group where I made good friends who I meet with every week. Finally, to build up my muscles and strength, I’ve had physiotherapy support. I really love coming here; it’s a place of real support and kindness.

The Hospice has been a huge benefit to me in my recovery. It’s not just my physical recovery, but also the emotional side of it. Coming here has given me the courage to think about the future.”
