Caroline & Muriel's Story

"Seeing my nan at peace had a big impact on me."

“My nan was in the Hospice 22 years ago. Ever since then, whenever the Hospice puts on an event, I try to go along. I promised my nan that I’d do whatever I could to give someone else the compassion that we experienced.

"When my nan was in the Hospice, she was only there for seven hours, but they made her comfortable and looked after my granddad. Seeing my nan at peace had a big impact on me. There were so many little touches that meant so much. My grandad couldn’t believe it was so different to what he’d thought – it was like a home.

"Afterwards, I had some counselling [from the Hospice] on the phone. Having someone outside of the family I could open up to really helped me.

"This year, I’ll be doing Bubble Rush with my two youngest goddaughters. There aren’t many occasions where you get to giggle your way through the best bubble bath going! We always try to dress up or do a theme.

"You’re having such a laugh, and you’re doing it for an important reason, but it’s not sombre. We have so much fun, seeing all the people and trying to find the little ones through the bubbles. I try to wear a picture of my nan. It makes you smile to see the pictures of people still being remembered.”
