Adrienne welcomes visitors to our Inpatient Unit as part of the Volunteer Meet and Greet Team. The retired GP explains what it’s like to be the first face that visitors see at the Hospice.
“It’s very important that you’re open and receptive when you answer the door. You want to make people feel welcome. It’s always nice when you greet somebody you’ve greeted before and they remember you, and you know who they’ve come to see. When somebody comes back after a loved one has died, I’m able to say, ‘I’m so sorry. How are you bearing up?’”
“The thing that’s wonderful about the Hospice is that it’s almost a sacred space. From the moment I park the car, it feels like a healing environment. I feel very privileged to walk into it.”
“At the end of a shift, when I go back out into the big bad world – I’m more aware of making every moment count. Suddenly someone cutting me off in the road is not a big deal. I know I’ve been useful in a small way to somebody.”
