Meet Sandy, Reception Volunteer

Sandy greets every visitor with a smile

“I’ve been volunteering with the Hospice reception team for over ten years, and I get so much out of it. Everyone is so lovely and kind here. There’s always someone who can help you and that makes a big difference.

When people come into the Hospice and look nervous, just smiling at them can change their demeanour. Sometimes you can hear the desperation in peoples’ voices on the phone, and you can calm them down and help find what they need.

I’m a naturally friendly person and people always talk to me. If someone is quiet, I’ll take a quiet tone as well to make them feel secure.

After a morning at the Hospice, I have a feeling of warmth. I’d really miss it if I didn’t do it.”
